NotesIn case the title puzzles you: The title Image Management is a new name for Composition for Photographers. Painters, illustrators, draftsmen, etchers, lithographers, writers, typesetters, letterers, map and chart makers, and so forth, compose their pictures, because they put together images within picture-planes to express ideas and emotions. This they do by hand. Photographers, however, capture nature-made images by enticing them to enter their cameras, where they are caught on sensitive surfaces. One of the most important operations of this activity is to arrange the images into correct relationship with each other- and with the limits of the film or plate- before the trap is sprung, that is before the shutter is released. The chief purpose of this book is to enable the photographer to do some fruitful thinking while managing the images before exposure. But those who prefer to introduce hand-made images among the nature-made ones (as is done in retouching), or those who wish to replace the nature-made images by hand-made ones (as is done in the bromoil process) shall not be let down either. After all, basically correct thinking is at the root of all successful picture-making.
