This particular “Composition” book was gifted by Arthur Wesley Dow to May Gearhart. In the beginning end paper, there are five small tipped-in cyanotypes printed by Dow. Four are landscapes, and one is a picture of Dow writing a note. Each of the five images has a hand-written note on the backside.

On the inside front cover, there is a dedication note, handwritten and signed by Dow, that says:

My dear miss Gearhart,

We shall be very glad to have you in the class again and also to welcome your sister. Already, one from Berkeley, and another from Oakland have applied. Hoping that [cannot decipher] has been a good one - [cannot decipher] me.
