Book focuses on the anatomy and the physiology--rather than the cosmetics--of American buildings. Although the author reinforces the intimate connection between how people make a building and how they make it beautiful, his focus is on what holds the building together. He is primarily interested in materials and techniques of construction by means of a view of American bridges, dams, and other structures.
