| Notes | This exhibition was assembled to demonstrate the diversity of progressive furniture design in the Grand Rapids area during the American Arts and Crafts period (1895-1915). In the trade, the style was variously termed "mission," "new art," "straight line," or "arts and crafts," and manufacturers gave their lines names like "Quaint," "Lifetime," "Craftsman," and "Handicraft" to denote their structurally expressive, handmade appearance. Beginning in 1904, a number of Grand Rapids companies also used the term "Modern English" to describe an Arts and Crafts line with a more sleek appearance than most "mission" furniture. |
