Sale November 23 - December 21, 1996 106 Pages  HardBack  Approximate Size:  8-3/4 Inches x 11-1/4 Inches  Preface by Thomas Maher, Detroit, Michigan :  "In 1982, I had the privilege of meeting Charles and Jane Kaufmann at the first major Robert Skinner Gallery Arts and Crafts sale featuring the collection of James Bakker.  A visit after the sale to their 18th Century Cape Cod home furnished with Arts and Crafts furniture was inspiring.    The opportunity to view a complete interior with Gustav Stickley furniture in original finish was an education that no seminar or lecture could provide.  Even more impressive than the objects was the extensive reference library or original catalogs and periodcas including:  The Craftsman; The Studio and Keramic Studio.  The inspiration and mentoring from the Kaufmanns And William and Patsy Porter of Birmingham, Michigan provided the education necessary to pursue and collect with thought and discretion.  The late 1970's and early 1980's was a time of discovery and confusion for collectors of Arts and Crafts.  The opportunity to see and study items in the Kaufmann and Porter collections in their original finish prevented many collecting mistakes.  The Kaufmanns and the Porters pursued early Gustav Stickley (c. 1901 - 1904) at a time when many collectors chose the later and more familiar pieces (c. 1909 - 1916).  While many dismissed the early Gustav Stickley designs as eccentric these are now viewed as his definitive designs.   Jane decided to sell the majority of her collection when she recently moved to smaller quarters.  She and Chuck contacted Harold Sack in the late 1970's and sold their collection of Early American Furniture.  Jane repeated the process when she elected to sell her Arts & Crafts collection through The John Toomey - Don Treadway GAlleries.  The presentation of the collection in the Chicago area represents a return visit to the hometown that she and Chuck shared.   After fourteen years of apprenticeship and tutelage I was honored to repay my debt by acting as her attorney and consultant.  This catalog focuses on the Kaufmann's early examples of Gustav Stickley and will educate and challenge a new generation of collectors to pursue the objects that she and Chuck enjoyed.
